Below You Can Find Out More About Our Bloodbank Program And The Specific Requirements For Your Dog To Donate. Your Dog Could Be Saving Lives Very Soon!
Blood donors are critical to veterinary medicine. When a patient is in need of a transfusion, having access to a supply of blood can greatly improve a pets’ chances of recovery. CVES is currently screening potential canine donors. Dogs should be between the ages of 2 and 8 and weigh more than 55 pounds. All dogs must be current on vaccinations, on a heartworm preventative year-round and have a friendly disposition. If your dog meets our donor criteria and you are interested in having them screened to be a donor, please give us your contact information below and someone will contact you shortly.
We are happy to announce our recent collaboration with Greyhounds Only, Inc. - a breed rescue for retired racing greyhounds. Greyhounds Only was established in 1995 and has placed over 1000 greyhounds in permanent homes. Our blood bank staff visits one of the facilities where many adoptable dogs are boarded and tests about ten greyhounds per month. The dogs that turn out to be universal donors are added to our growing pack of life-savers, and their adoptive families are encouraged to bring them in several times a year to donate.
Greyhounds make excellent blood donors for several reasons. They are generally quiet and gentle, allowing one to draw blood from them with ease. They have a significantly higher proportion of red blood cells (PCV) than other breeds (55-65 for greyhounds vs. 37-55 for other breeds). Greyhounds are also much more likely to be ‘universal donors’ – thus decreasing the likelihood of the recipient having a transfusion reaction. Overall, 7-10% of dogs are universal donors. However, 60% of greyhounds are universal donors!
