What is Chicago Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center?
Chicago Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center (CVESC) began as an after-hours emergency veterinary hospital over thirty years ago. The center has worked with many area veterinary hospitals to provide help for pet owners with emergencies and illnesses after the regular veterinarians’ offices have closed. In August of 2010 several veterinary specialists joined the emergency team expanding our services and capabilities to include a full complement of specialties: cardiology, dentistry and oral surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, radiology, and surgery.

How do I know when I have an emergency with my pet?
We always tell owners to use their best judgment as you know your pet better than anyone else. If your pet is exhibiting any kind of concerning behavior never hesitate to call us. Once you explain what is happening we will be able to advise you as to whether or not you need to bring your pet in. If your pet is in distress of any kind definitely come right in, you do not need to call ahead.
My veterinarian referred me to you for overnight care what do I need to do?
Usually when your veterinarian refers you to us they speak with one of our veterinarians and often send us copies of your records before you arrive. However, you can bring a copy of the record with you. Also please bring any medications or other products your veterinarian gives you.
How long will I have to wait to be seen?
We know your time is important and we do everything we can to get you taken care of in a timely manner. Our emergency room operates exactly as a human emergency room operates. All patients are seen according to how critical he/she is.
Am I allowed to visit my pet while he/she is hospitalized?
You are welcome to visit. General visiting hours are 10AM-10PM Monday-Friday. Weekend and Holiday visits are by arrangement. We ask that you arrange a time with the technician caring for your pet. Visits should be limited to twenty minutes. This will allow your pet to get the rest and care that he/she requires. Due to space and privacy issues no more than two visitors at a time will be allowed. Please be aware that there may be times you will have to wait to be brought in to visit your pet regardless of previous arrangements. This is usually due to an unforeseen emergency and our staff will attend to your visit as soon as is safely possible.
May I leave personal items with my hospitalized pet?
Any personal items left with your pet may not be returned. We encourage you to take your pet’s belonging home with you. Items left with your pet may become soiled and need to be cleaned or disposed of for sanitary reasons. If your pet is on a special diet you may leave the food with the hospital staff.
How do I get an update on my pet’s condition?
You are welcome to call us at anytime to get an update over the phone. If your pet is in the ICU we ask that you not call while doctors and technicians are doing rounds between 6AM and 9AM. If your pet’s condition changes drastically we will contact you immediately. At times you may be asked to call back or wait for a callback from the doctor or technician. This is because they are providing care to patients and are unable to be interrupted at that time. In order to provide the best care possible for all pets, we request that only one family member call for updates.
I found a stray animal can I bring it to your facility?
We can check all stray animals for microchips using our microchip scanners. However, we do not keep stray animals at our facility. All stray animals should be brought to Chicago Animal Care and Control at 2741 S. Western Avenue, Chicago, IL 60608
Can CVESC be my regular veterinary hospital?
The doctors at our hospital do not offer routine care such as vaccinations and other preventative care. Our hospital acts as an extension of services provided by your regular veterinarian. We work closely with your veterinarian to ensure the most comprehensive care for your pet.
